description: Machine tool, metrology and component makers win on the shortlist before the RFQ. How Torke reaches plant engineers at the manufacturers on your list.
---

# On the shortlist before the RFQ is sent

You sell machine tools, metrology systems, automation for machining or precision components to manufacturers who make demanding parts. A machine is bought when a capacity plan or a new part contract creates the need, and by the time a request for quotation reaches you, the shortlist was usually drawn up by engineers you never spoke to. For a Swiss maker most of those buyers are abroad, since the Swiss technology industry exports 78% of what it sells.

In Precision Engineering & Machinery, three dated signals open a target account for outreach: Capacity investment, New part contract, Engineers hired.

## Who this page is for

- Machine tool and machining automation makers selling to manufacturers
- Metrology system vendors selling to aerospace, medical and automotive suppliers
- Precision component makers in aerospace, medical, automotive and watch chains

Usual starting point: [Demand](https://torke.tech/service#practices)

## How do you increase sales for a precision engineering or machinery company?

Reach manufacturing and process engineers before the specification is written, because an RFQ sent with the incumbent's parameters is mostly decided. Map engineering, quality and purchasing at each named plant, give them proof they can test on their own parts, and contact them when a new line, a supplier change or a requalification opens a project.

## Why does the usual approach stall in Precision Engineering & Machinery?

Capital equipment is bought against a dated need, a new contract, a new part or a capacity gap, and manufacturing engineering writes the specification around the machines and suppliers it already knows. The request for quotation then goes to two or three names, and a supplier who first hears of the project at that stage is quoting on someone else's specification, where price is the only argument left. The decision was shaped months earlier, in conversations between the engineers and the suppliers they called first.

Volume marketing reaches the wrong moment. Broad campaigns land with engineers who have no project, while the plants that will buy this year number in the hundreds and announce their investments in trade press, at fairs and in their own newsrooms. The cost of that gap grows when an export market shifts, as when Swiss machine tool exports to the US fell 43% in the third quarter of 2025 under additional US tariffs, and a maker suddenly needs conversations with named plants in countries where it has no agent.

If you sell through a distributor network that owns the customer relationship, or your components are bought from a catalogue by thousands of workshops, this page describes the wrong problem, and your distributors or a strong catalogue will do more for you.

## Where does pipeline break in Precision Engineering & Machinery?

We look at five stages in the Diagnostic, because each fails for a different reason. The rows show the failure we look for first at each stage and what changes once Torke fixes it, in the order a deal meets them.

### Discovery

Where it breaks

Manufacturing engineers compare cycle times, tolerances and materials before calling anyone, and cannot find your process data

What changes once it is fixed

The Visibility practice puts your process data, in words your engineers approved, on the pages buyers and AI assistants read before sales

### Timing

Where it breaks

You hear of a capacity investment when the request for quotation arrives, after engineers wrote the specification around suppliers they know

What changes once it is fixed

Account signals ranks new plants, contracts and engineering hiring at target accounts, and Demand covers them before the specification is written

### Evaluation

Where it breaks

The request for quotation goes to two or three names, and a supplier first contacted at that stage has only price left to argue

What changes once it is fixed

Demand covers manufacturing engineering at agreed accounts in the weeks after a capacity investment or contract is announced

### Qualification

Where it breaks

Fair conversations go cold while your engineers return to installations, and requests in several languages wait for the right rep

What changes once it is fixed

Inbound response answers each request in the buyer's language with meeting times checked on the rep's calendar, and leads count with five facts

### Handover

Where it breaks

Agents in some countries keep their own lists and your team keeps another, so nobody can say which accounts are moving

What changes once it is fixed

Revenue operations sets one set of lifecycle stages, routing and reporting across agents and direct sales

## Who is in the buying group?

One person rarely decides alone, so a lead from the wrong role moves nothing. These are the roles we map at every account on your list.

### Who signs

The plant or operations manager, or the managing director at a smaller supplier, with finance approving the investment and purchasing negotiating terms.

### Who evaluates

Manufacturing and process engineers, quality and metrology staff, and the production lead whose team will run the machine.

### Who can block

Purchasing when an existing supplier or agent is preferred, quality when a new process forces the part to be requalified with the end customer, and finance when the payback rests on volumes nobody has confirmed.

## Which signals open an account in Precision Engineering & Machinery?

Each signal is a dated, public event a sceptical buyer could check in thirty seconds. Market-wide news can change an account's conditions, and we never write it up as something that company did.

| Signal | What it changes inside the account |
|---|---|
| A new plant, hall or capacity investment is announced | Equipment for it is being specified now, and the engineers writing the specification are taking calls |
| A supplier announces a new long-term contract or part program | Capacity for that part has to be in place by a known date |
| Hiring for manufacturing engineers, process engineers or CNC programmers | The account is adding production capability and someone owns the plan |
| A tariff or trade change moves where an account sources its parts or machines | Supplier lists are being reopened, and a new supplier can enter at a known moment |
| The account exhibits at EMO in Milan, 4 to 8 October 2027 | Production and engineering leads are reachable in person for a known week, and a meeting can be set before and after |

## What does a qualified lead look like here?

The manufacturing engineering manager at an aerospace component supplier on your agreed list replies that a new long-term contract needs five-axis capacity next year and asks for cycle time data on a comparable titanium part. The basis for contacting them in their country is recorded, and the account is not an open opportunity in your CRM. That reply, with the contract announcement it answered, is a qualified lead.

A lead counts only when all five facts are recorded, and you have five business days to reject it with a reason. The [Torke Service page](https://torke.tech/service#qualified) explains each fact.

**Fact one**

A named person in the buying group

**Fact two**

At an account you agreed to in writing

**Fact three**

A need or timing in their own words

**Fact four**

A lawful basis for contact

**Fact five**

Not already open in your CRM

## Where should you start?

Every client starts with the Diagnostic, and for machinery it most often points to Demand, because the constraint is timing against announced investments, and sometimes to Revenue operations when agents and direct sales keep separate pipelines.

Every engagement opens with the Diagnostic, two to three weeks that end on one of four decisions: stop, fix one barrier, run one practice, or expand later.

[Demand](https://torke.tech/service#practices)

The practice the Diagnostic most often points to here, run month by month once it does.

## How do Torke Service and Torke Engine help?

The same engines run in both, so you can begin with one and move to the other without starting over.

### Torke Service, we run it

For example, a metrology maker that lost a large part of its US business looks for plants in Germany and Italy where it has no agent. Torke runs Demand against the agreed list of aerospace and medical component suppliers, watching for capacity investments and new contracts, and plans meetings around the next fair where those accounts exhibit.

[How Torke Service works](https://torke.tech/service)

### Torke Engine, your team runs it

Account signals matters most here, because capacity investments, contracts and hiring at the plants you target are public and dated, and Inbound response matters next, because requests arrive in several languages and need routing to the right rep or agent. First-touch outreach suits engineering buyers, since every sentence traces to what the plant announced and anything inferred is asked as a question.

For example, a marketer asks the assistant to find which target plants in Germany and Italy announced capacity investments this month and draft first emails to their manufacturing engineering leads. The assistant returns the accounts ranked by the strength of each dated event, with one draft per person tied to the announcement it comes from, and a person on the team sends each one.

[How Torke Engine works](https://torke.tech/engine)

## What can you expect?

You can stop after any stage and keep what it produced.

### A Diagnostic that can say stop

In two to three weeks the Diagnostic tells you whether you arrive too late in your buyers' projects or lose them for another reason, and ends on one of four decisions: stop, fix one barrier, run one practice, or expand later.

### Leads tied to a project

Each qualified lead names a person in the buying group at an agreed account with the need in their own words and the evidence attached, and your team has five business days to reject it.

### A monthly read with honest gaps

Every month you receive the leads and a written read of coverage, spend against plan and each channel's contribution, and results too small to judge are reported that way.

## What do teams in Precision Engineering & Machinery ask about Torke?

Each answer stands on its own, so you can forward one to a colleague, and an assistant asked the same question can quote it as it is.

### How does a machine tool maker get on the shortlist before an RFQ?

Capital equipment is bought against a dated need such as a new contract, a new part or a capacity gap, and manufacturing engineering writes the specification around the machines and suppliers it already knows before the request for quotation goes to two or three names. A machine tool or metrology maker therefore has to be in that conversation before the specification is written. Torke's Demand practice covers manufacturing engineering at agreed accounts in the weeks after a capacity investment or contract is announced.

### How can a Swiss machinery maker reach plants abroad where it has no agent?

The Swiss technology industry exports 78% of what it sells, and a shift such as the 43% fall in Swiss machine tool exports to the US in the third quarter of 2025 under additional US tariffs can leave a maker needing conversations with plants in countries where it has no agent. Torke's Demand practice works an agreed list of named plants, timed to dated public events such as capacity investments and new contracts, and Torke Engine's Inbound response answers the requests that follow in the buyer's language.

### Where should a precision engineering company start with Torke?

A precision engineering or machinery company starts with Torke's Diagnostic, which reads its account list against the requests for quotation it lost and the ones that arrived with no prior contact. It most often points to the Demand practice, because the constraint is timing against announced investments, and sometimes to Revenue operations when agents and direct sales keep separate pipelines.

### How long is the sales cycle for precision engineering companies selling to manufacturers?

Capital equipment moves through stages: an operations champion names the need, a business case is built and reviewed, and finance approves the budget. Smaller machines can close in about three months, while larger investments and any part requalification with the end customer push it past a year.

### Who decides on a new machine tool or metrology system?

The plant or operations manager, or the managing director at a smaller supplier, signs with finance and purchasing. Manufacturing, process, quality and metrology engineers evaluate, and purchasing or quality can block when an incumbent supplier or a requalification is involved.
