Can LinkedIn ads reach a list of a few hundred companies?

A ten-minute calculator for the only marketer at a technical B2B company. You enter your account list, your match rate and the people you target, and it tells you whether the campaign will serve, how far it sits from LinkedIn's own recommendation, what a month of reach costs at your CPM, and what to report to your founder when a lead count is out of reach.

Do LinkedIn ads work for a small target account list?

They serve once the matched audience reaches 300 members, but LinkedIn suggests 50,000 members for an ad set and at least 1,000 companies for a company list. A list of a few hundred accounts sits far below both, so delivery concentrates on the largest accounts and the few conversions a quarter cannot support a cost per lead.

What do LinkedIn and the surveys say?

What's in the arithmetic

  • Seven inputs, with LinkedIn's own floor and recommendations quoted and linked
  • Eight formulas, from audience size to monthly budget at your CPM
  • A worked example for a list of 250 companies
  • What each result band means, from “will not serve” to “your market is probably not small”
  • A weekly report of five numbers to give your founder in place of a lead count
  • A one-paragraph memo for your founder, filled in from your results
  • A weekly loop you can run by hand or from your AI assistant

Who the arithmetic is for

For the first or only marketer at a B2B company of roughly 10 to 80 people, reporting to the CEO, selling to a list of named companies where a handful of engineers and managers decide each purchase.

Who it's not for

If your company sells to tens of thousands of buyers who already search for your category, standard demand programs can work, and the calculator will tell you so when your audience passes 50,000.

A look at the numbers

The example uses round numbers to show the arithmetic and comes from no real company. LinkedIn's figures are quoted from its own help page and documentation, linked in the file.

A list of 250 companies, 80% matched, with six people per company in the targeted roles, gives an audience of 1,200. That serves, because it passes the floor of 300, but it is 2.4% of the 50,000 members LinkedIn suggests and a quarter of the 1,000 companies it suggests for a list. At five impressions a month for half the audience, the campaign needs 3,000 impressions a month, so the audience runs out long before the budget does, and a quarter of results from 250 companies is too few to read as a cost per lead.

Questions about the arithmetic

What if I have already uploaded my list to Campaign Manager?

Enter the audience size Campaign Manager reports, because it replaces the estimate and makes every other number more accurate. Your own Campaign Manager forecast beats the estimate the day you have it.

Where do the default reach and frequency values come from?

Kirill Vdov's published method for calculating a LinkedIn Ads budget assumes about half the audience is active in a month and five impressions per person for cold campaigns. They come from one practitioner's method, so treat them as starting values and change them to your own figures as soon as you have a month of data.
