From a lab sample to a specification
You sell coatings, nanomaterials or specialty chemicals to manufacturers who build them into their own products, in automotive, electronics, packaging or medical devices. The customers who can specify you number in the hundreds, and most of your pipeline sits in sample orders and lab trials that proved the material and never reached a specification.
Who this page is for
- Coatings and nanomaterials companies selling to automotive and electronics makers
- Specialty chemicals suppliers whose material is specified into a customer's product
- Materials companies selling to packaging and medical device manufacturers
Usual starting point: Diagnostic
How do you increase sales for a advanced materials or specialty chemicals company?
Aim every trial at a specification. Volume orders follow only once a material is written into a product's bill of materials, so reach the platform owner, quality and procurement at each manufacturer on your list as well as the engineer who ran the trial, and time outreach to a new platform, a plant investment or a PFAS decision.
What do the numbers say about Advanced Materials & Chemicals?
Each figure links to the page it comes from, so you can check it before you repeat it.
| What the evidence says | Source |
|---|---|
| Under REACH, a substance made or imported in quantities of one tonne or more a year must be registered with ECHA. | Guichet.lu, Luxembourg government |
| ECHA published the proposed EU-wide PFAS restriction on 7 February 2023, covering around 10,000 substances. | Mayer Brown (28 February 2023) |
| ECHA's risk assessment committee adopted its final PFAS opinion on 2 March 2026. | CMS (8 April 2026) |
| The EU chemical industry has a turnover of EUR 635 billion and employs 1.2 million people. | European Commission, reporting Cefic Facts & Figures 2025 (7 January 2026) |
Why does the usual approach stall in Advanced Materials & Chemicals?
A lab trial answers the development engineer's question, whether the material performs in the customer's process. Volume orders need a specification, and changing a specification means requalifying the product. In automotive, a supplier has to complete the Production Part Approval Process before parts ship in production quantities, procurement wants a second source and a price for the life of the program, and EHS checks the substance's status, since under REACH a substance made or imported in quantities of one tonne or more a year cannot be placed on the EU market without registration. The engineer who ran the trial cannot supply all of that, so the sample waits for the next product generation.
Volume marketing does not reach the specification. A new material usually has no search category of its own, so buyers do not search for it, and broad campaigns about sustainability or performance reach researchers rather than the platform owner who decides the next product's bill of materials. For a Swiss company the list sits mostly abroad, and each specification is won at a customer working in its own language and to its own product calendar.
If you sell commodity chemicals on price through distributors, this page describes the wrong problem, because that market is won on supply terms and distributor reach rather than on specifications at named accounts.
Where does pipeline break in Advanced Materials & Chemicals?
We look at five stages in the Diagnostic, because each fails for a different reason. The rows show the failure we look for first at each stage and what changes once Torke fixes it, in the order a deal meets them.
-
Discovery
Where it breaks
A new material usually has no search category, so buyers do not search for it and search ads find little demand to capture
What changes once it is fixed
Torke's Visibility practice sets the positioning and category language and builds the pages buyers and AI assistants read before sales
-
Timing
Where it breaks
A PFAS restriction or a new platform sets a substitution timetable the manufacturer does not control, and a supplier who hears late misses it
What changes once it is fixed
Account signals watch regulator feeds and dated events at your target accounts, such as a platform announcement or plant investment, each morning
-
Evaluation
Where it breaks
The customer's lab tests every thickness, temperature or durability figure, and EHS checks the substance's REACH status before it is bought
What changes once it is fixed
Campaigns on approved claims checks every performance figure against the data sheet your team approved before any file is exported
-
Qualification
Where it breaks
Sample orders and lab trials convince a development engineer and never reach the platform owner who writes the specification
What changes once it is fixed
A lead counts only when a named person in the buying group, such as the platform owner, states a need or a timing in their own words
-
Handover
Where it breaks
Sample orders look like pipeline in the CRM, while none of them is tied to a product program with a date for its specification
What changes once it is fixed
Torke's Revenue operations practice sets lifecycle stages so a trial tied to a named platform is counted apart from a sample with no program
Who is in the buying group?
One person rarely decides alone, so a lead from the wrong role moves nothing. These are the roles we map at every account on your list.
Who signs
The head of R&D or the platform owner for the product that will use the material, with procurement agreeing the supply terms.
Who evaluates
The development and process engineers who run the trials, the quality team that qualifies the supplier, and application engineers at the tier supplier when the material goes into a component.
Who can block
Procurement, which wants a second source and a long-term price, EHS and regulatory affairs, which check the material's status under rules such as REACH, and quality, when requalification would delay the product launch.
Which signals open an account in Advanced Materials & Chemicals?
Each signal is a dated, public event a sceptical buyer could check in thirty seconds. Market-wide news can change an account's conditions, and we never write it up as something that company did.
| Signal | What it changes inside the account |
|---|---|
| A regulatory opinion on a substance group is published, such as ECHA's committee opinions on PFAS in March 2026 | Manufacturers using those substances need substitutes on a timetable, and their engineers are looking now |
| A customer announces a new product platform or model generation | The bill of materials for that platform is being decided, and a material specified now stays in for years |
| A plant investment or new production line is announced | Process choices are being made, so coatings or chemistries can enter the line design |
| Hiring for materials or process engineers on a named program | A funded development project exists, and the people hired will run its trials |
| Your own REACH registration or a customer qualification is completed | An objection that stopped earlier conversations is gone, so dormant trials can restart |
What does a qualified lead look like here?
The head of materials development at an automotive supplier on your agreed list replies that their current coating contains a PFAS they expect to lose and that they want trial samples and test data before the next platform's design freeze. The basis for contacting them in their country is recorded, and the account is not an open opportunity in your CRM. That reply, with the regulatory opinion it answered, is a qualified lead.
A lead counts only when all five facts are recorded, and you have five business days to reject it with a reason. The Torke Service page explains each fact.
- Fact one
- A named person in the buying group
- Fact two
- At an account you agreed to in writing
- Fact three
- A need or timing in their own words
- Fact four
- A lawful basis for contact
- Fact five
- Not already open in your CRM
Where should you start?
Every materials client starts with the Diagnostic, which most often points to Demand when buyers already have a name for the material and to Visibility when they do not, since nobody can shortlist a material they have no words for.
Every engagement opens with the Diagnostic, two to three weeks that end on one of four decisions: stop, fix one barrier, run one practice, or expand later.
How do Torke Service and Torke Engine help?
The same engines run in both, so you can begin with one and move to the other without starting over.
Torke Service, we run it
For example, a nanocoating spin-off with dozens of sample orders learns in the Diagnostic that none of them reached a platform owner. Torke runs Demand against the manufacturers on the agreed list, watches restriction news and platform announcements, and builds the material procurement and quality need, while your applications engineers keep the trials and the technical relationship.
How Torke Service worksTorke Engine, your team runs it
Account signals, campaigns on approved claims and the performance read matter most here. Regulatory events give a dated reason to talk, approved claims keep every measured figure identical to your data sheet, and the weekly read says plainly when a thin week cannot be judged.
For example, a marketer asks the assistant to list the accounts on the account list where a dated public event this month, such as a newsroom post or a job advert, mentions PFAS substitution, and to draft Google search ads for a PFAS-free coating. The assistant returns the accounts with each event's source and date, and ad files in Google's import format where every performance figure is checked against the approved data sheet, with the campaigns paused for a person to release.
How Torke Engine worksWhat can you expect?
You can stop after any stage and keep what it produced.
A decision on where to start
The Diagnostic runs for two to three weeks on your account list, recent wins and losses and current campaigns, and ends on one of four decisions, stop included.
Leads tied to a dated event
Each lead arrives with its five recorded facts and the event it answered, and you have five business days to reject it with a reason from a fixed list.
A monthly keep, cut or change
Every month you receive the leads and a written read of what each channel contributed with its uncertainty stated, ending on a keep, cut or change recommendation.
What do teams in Advanced Materials & Chemicals ask about Torke?
Each answer stands on its own, so you can forward one to a colleague, and an assistant asked the same question can quote it as it is.
Where should an advanced materials company start with Torke?
An advanced materials or specialty chemicals company starts with Torke's Diagnostic, which looks at the trials and sample orders that never reached a specification and at whether buyers can find and describe the material. It most often points to the Demand practice when the material already has a name buyers use, and to the Visibility practice when it does not.
Why do successful lab trials of a new material not lead to orders?
A lab trial answers the development engineer's question, while volume orders need a specification, and changing a specification means requalifying the product, for example through the Production Part Approval Process in automotive. Torke's Demand practice covers the platform owners, procurement and quality at the manufacturers on an agreed list, so a materials supplier's trial reaches the people who write the specification.
How can a coatings supplier reach manufacturers replacing PFAS?
ECHA published the proposed EU-wide PFAS restriction on 7 February 2023, and manufacturers using those substances have to replace them on a timetable they do not set. Torke Engine's Account signals module watches regulator feeds and dated events at a coatings supplier's target accounts, so its team speaks to the manufacturers affected while they are still choosing a substitute.
How long is the sales cycle for advanced materials companies selling to manufacturers?
Often several years, because volume orders need a specification and changing one means requalifying the product. In automotive a supplier has to complete the Production Part Approval Process before parts ship in production quantities.
Who decides whether a manufacturer specifies a new material?
The head of R&D or the platform owner signs off, development and process engineers and quality evaluate, and procurement, EHS and regulatory affairs can block it over second sourcing, price or REACH status.
